The Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of paintings by artist Melissa Chandon, entitled Roadside Places in the Floyd Bettiga Gallery. Melissa Chandon’s oil paintings are rendered with a passionate physical language that evokes a deep feeling of isolation and loneliness amidst the welcoming tradition of her subjects. The intentional use of negative space via shape and shadow create an aura of solitude and privacy to which the viewer is slowly drawn into the environment. Focusing on the vanishing icons of Americana, including road side attractions, historical agricultural equipment and beloved Volkswagen Buses, Chandon work encompasses the sentiment of these disappearing symbols one might pass on a lonely stretch of road.
