The Colors of San Miguel de Allende
Artist Workshop and Cultural Tour

With Melissa Chandon and Philippe Gandiol

March 14 – 21, 2009

Space very limited

March 14, Saturday
Your tour begins in San Miguel at the charming Villa Mirasol. Located just 4 blocks from the main square, Villa Mirasol is a two-story mansion turned hotel. All accommodations have their own outside space. Tonight you’ll enjoy a wine reception/orientation on the patio with Melissa, Philippe and your other traveling companions.

March 15, Sunday
San Miguel is one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial towns. This morning begins with a House and Garden tour. You’ll get a rare glimpse at the luxurious gardens and casas hidden behind the imposing Moorish walls. The afternoon is
free to take a gallery walk where you’ll see indigenous textiles, handmade paper, ceremonial dance masks, Milagros, ceramics, paintings and more.
Workshop participants will join Melissa and Phillipe for an afternoon of sketching.

March 16, Monday
San Miguel’s Artisans Market has hundreds of stands that display traditional, contemporary and innovative Mexican handicrafts and decorative items. Keep your eyes open for some amazing retablos (prayers for giving thanks).
Following a visit to the market Melissa and Philippe will take you on a tour of the murals of San Miguel.

March 17, Tuesday
The Tuesday market is a raucous and wonderful weekly festival …..produce, fresh fish, antiques, traditional medicines, bootleg CD’s and mountains of used clothing. This open-air market is truly a Mexico experience. You
will see an astounding array of merchandise but the real fun is in observing the social event as entire families stroll the crowded aisles visiting and doing their weekly shopping. This afternoon, a plein air painting workshop for  art
class participants.
March 18, Wednesday
Following breakfast this morning we head over to the studio of Rebecca Peterson where you’ll create your own Mexican nicho. Nichos are the tin boxes with glass doors that express your innermost thoughts with an assemblage of found objects, collage, Milagros and miniatures. All
materials are provided, however, you may want to bring something special from home to add to your “Window to the Soul.” Rebecca has been living in San Miguel for 11 years and holds a Master of Arts degree. She will also serve you a lunch of local fare.

March 19, Thursday
This afternoon you head over to the La Cocina cooking school where you will begin your immersion into Mexican gastronomy and food culture. The class is taught in English and will feature traditional Mexican cooking.
The class is mostly hands-on, unless you prefer to watch.
Dinner, margaritas and recipe packets are included.

March 20, Friday
Today is free to take advantage of the many optional tours that are available.  Workshop participants will study with Melissa and Philippe.  Tonight a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

March 21, Saturday
Today you bid farewell to this beautiful city and return home.
